Microsoft Ads – A
product with many names
Especially in the USA, but also in Germany, the search engines Bing and Yahoo account for over 30% and 12% of desktop search queries, respectively, and therefore should not be ignored. However, those aren't the only advantages of Bing Ads.
The search engine Bing was launched on June 1, 2009, as a successor to Live Search and has been cooperating with Yahoo since July 29, 2009.
Both search engines were developed as competitors to Google to challenge the titan's market share. Continuously growing, the Yahoo Bing Network has established itself as the number 2 among search engines in Germany.
At the same time, in 2009, the first advertising opportunities on Bing were developed under the name Microsoft Advertising adCenter. Together with the established Yahoo Bing Network, which consists of various partner sites, the first ads were rolled out.
Over the past few years, the advertising platform, now renamed Bing Ads, has been able to attract about 700 million users for Yahoo and Bing.
However, the German version offers fewer features than Google or the US version of Bing. And the impressive number of users is contrasted by Google's massive market share of the total volume.
(In 2018, about 86% of desktop searches and over 95% of mobile searches).
In 2019, it seems the circle is closing for Microsoft: With the renaming of Bing Ads to Microsoft Advertising, the original name is being revisited, revealing the holistic approach. Furthermore, some users have become more familiar with Microsoft since the introduction of the Microsoft Audience Network in 2018.
